“You’re Not the Villain”
Devotional: When Discernment Makes You the Villain
I remember being in a room where everyone was sharing, but I noticed the cracks beneath the smiles, the half-truths, the hurts people kept hidden, the pain they didn't dare name. Everyone said just enough not to be judged, to keep the peace.
I couldn't stay quiet. I asked questions.
The moment I did, I felt the discomfort, the tension, the "I don't want to answer this" look. And then I heard it: I was called intrusive.
Discernment can feel like this.
Seeing clearly, noticing what others ignore, and asking hard questions can make you feel like the villain.
Not because you're wrong.
Not because you lack love.
But because the truth is threatening, denial feels safer.
Reflection:
-
Have you ever spoken what needed to be said and felt rejected or misunderstood?
-
What truths in your life are hard to name, even to yourself?
Discernment is not rebellion or insensitivity. It is a gift, a spiritual sensitivity to what God wants you to see, even when others resist it. Jesus experienced this, too. His clarity often made Him appear a threat, even when He came in love.
Being awake in a room that prefers denial is uncomfortable. But you don't need to apologize for seeing clearly. You don't need to dim what God reveals. You don't need to silence the wisdom He has placed in your heart.
Reflection:
-
How can you hold clarity and love together in your conversations and relationships?
-
When your insight is misunderstood, what helps you stay grounded in God's perspective?
Remember, God entrusts discernment to hearts He knows can handle it. He trusts you to carry the truth with courage, humility, and love, even when others resist, ignore, or misunderstand it. Discernment is light, and light is always uncomfortable to those who prefer darkness.
If tonight feels heavy, if you feel misunderstood, or if being honest makes you feel like the villain breathe. You're not failing. You're not overreacting. You're not imagining it.
You're discerning.
God sees you. God affirms you. God stands
with you.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the gift of discernment. Help me walk in it with courage, love, and humility. When my clarity is misunderstood, steady my heart. Surround me with people who value honesty and healing, and teach me to honor You even when I see what others choose to deny. Amen.
