God Is Working Beneath the Surface.

A Devotional

SCRIPTURE: MATTHEW 6:6

"But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret…" — Matthew 6:6 (KJV)

Application

Growth doesn't always happen where everyone can see it.

Sometimes God takes us into unfamiliar places, introduces us to new people, and leads us beyond what feels comfortable. Not necessarily because we need to become someone else, but because He wants to develop something within us.

We often associate growth with visible results. We want to see the bloom, recognize the progress, and have something tangible to show for the season we're in. But what happens when God is working beneath the surface?

A seed doesn't bloom the moment it is planted. It needs soil, water, time, and sometimes even the pressure of being buried before anything becomes visible.

Our spiritual growth can look much the same.

There are seasons when God is pruning us, strengthening our roots, challenging our thinking, and teaching us to depend on Him in ways we haven't before. These seasons may not look impressive to others, but they are not wasted.

Matthew 6:6 reminds us that some of the most meaningful things happen in the secret place. Not everything God is developing in us needs an audience. Some lessons are learned in prayer, some healing happens in stillness, and some of our greatest growth takes place when nobody else knows what God is doing.

We also have to be careful not to compare our seasons with someone else's. We may see another woman flourishing, serving, speaking, leading, or walking confidently in her calling. We celebrate her, but sometimes we quietly wonder why our own growth doesn't look the same.

But another person's bloom is not evidence that you are behind.

God is not asking you to compete with someone else's garden. He is asking you to remain rooted in Him.

Don't let their bloom make you question what God is doing beneath your own soil.

There is beauty in becoming. There is purpose in preparation. And nothing is insignificant about a season when God is working on your roots.

Before the bloom comes the becoming, and even in the quiet, God is growing something beautiful.

Reflection

Take a moment to consider where you are in your spiritual journey.

  • Have I been comparing my growth, calling, or spiritual journey with someone else's?
  • Am I allowing God to work in the quiet places, even when I cannot see the results?
  • What might God be pruning, strengthening, or developing within me during this season?
  • Am I more concerned with how my growth appears to others than with how deeply I am rooted in Christ?
  • Can I trust God's timing even when my season doesn't look like the season I imagined?

A thought to carry with you:

You don't have to be the loudest, most visible, or most accomplished person in the room to be growing. You don't have to prove that God is working in your life. Sometimes the greatest evidence of growth is found in the things that have changed within you.

Personal Application

This week, intentionally make room for your secret place with God.

  • Spend time with Him without feeling the need to accomplish anything.
  • Celebrate another person's growth without measuring your own against it.
  • Ask God what He is developing in you rather than focusing only on what you want Him to produce through you.
  • Give yourself permission to grow quietly.
  • Write down one area where you recognize that God is changing you, even if nobody else can see it.

Remember, the Gardener knows exactly what He planted. He knows what needs pruning, what needs nurturing, and when it is time for something to bloom.

You can trust His hands with your becoming.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding me that growth doesn't always have to be visible to be meaningful. Forgive me for the moments when I have looked at someone else's season and questioned my own. Forgive me for measuring my progress by what I can see rather than trusting what You are doing beneath the surface.

Lord, teach me to be comfortable in the seasons of becoming. When You lead me somewhere unfamiliar, help me to be willing to go. When You introduce me to new people, help me to listen, learn, and grow without losing sight of who You have called me to be.

Prune the things in me that are keeping me from growing closer to You. Strengthen my roots. Develop my character. Heal the places that still need Your attention, and teach me to find joy in the quiet work of Your hands.

Help me celebrate others' growth without questioning my own. Let me never mistake someone else's bloom for the absence of Your work in my life.

Father, I don't want to rush the process. I don't want to force a bloom before its time. I want to be rooted in Your presence, grounded in Your Word, and willing to become everything You have purposed for me.

Remind me that the secret place is not insignificant. It is where I meet You, where You shape me, and where my roots grow deeper.

I surrender my timing, my expectations, and my desire to see immediate results. I trust You as my Gardener. And when the time comes to bloom, may my life reflect not my own efforts, but the beauty of what You have grown within me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Devotional takeaway:

Don't rush the bloom. Don't despise the becoming. Stay rooted, keep growing, and trust the Gardener.
