The Power of Bowing: Embracing Humility in Our Journey with God

My friend Meredith often shared a profound truth she received from the Lord: “He can’t lift an unbowed head.” What a powerful visual that is!

When we become fixated on outcomes that we believe are best, our necks can become stiff from straining to see what lies ahead. We often cling to our limited vision for the future, convinced it’s the only good one. But in those moments, when we bow our heads in humility, we position ourselves to receive the uplift that only God can provide. We open ourselves to His direction, which is infinitely wiser than our own.

Bowing instead of running.

Bowing instead of fixing.

Bowing instead of trying to make sense of things that may never make sense in my limited human mind.

Bowing instead of resisting Him.

Bowing instead of distrusting Him.

Bowing when things seem to be turning around.

Bowing when everything falls apart again.

And bowing when the suffering makes me question the goodness of God.

I’ve come to realize that suffering can actually be a sign that God is leading us in the right direction—toward redemption. It’s not a pitfall that prevents us from reaching our goals, nor is it proof that we should doubt God’s goodness. In fact, suffering doesn’t mean that trusting God is too risky; rather, it’s a powerful reminder to stay closer to Him than ever before.

When we face trials, we are called to bow our heads, surrendering our plans and expectations. This act of humility is what invites God to lift us up. It’s in our moments of suffering that we learn to lean on Him more fully, acknowledging that His ways are higher than our own.

Remember this:

God’s way is the right way, no matter how confusing or difficult the journey may seem.

God’s timing is perfect, even if it feels untimely from our perspective.

So, the next time you find yourself grappling with doubt or despair, remember to bow your head in humility. Release your grip on the outcomes you think are best, and trust that God is working all things for your good. Embrace the discomfort of your current situation, knowing that it’s leading you closer to Him and ultimately toward redemption.

Let’s make a conscious choice to bow, to trust, and to lean into God’s presence, especially during the challenging moments of life. Through humility, we open ourselves up to the incredible journey He has planned for us—one that leads to healing, hope, and abundant grace.
