Build the Altar

There are moments in life when God isn't asking us to move faster, try harder, or figure everything out.

He is simply asking us to build an altar.

Not a physical one made of stone,
But a spiritual one made of surrender.

In Scripture, altars were built for one reason:
to mark the place where God met someone.

Not where life was perfect.
Not where everything made sense.
Not where people felt strong.

But where they encountered God in a way that changed them.

Noah built an altar after the flood.
Abraham built an altar on the mountain he never wanted to climb.
Jacob built an altar after wrestling all night.
Joshua built an altar when they crossed a river that they couldn't cross without God.

Every altar had one thing in common:

It was built in a moment that required trust.

Not comfort.
Not clarity.
Trust.

Altars were places where people laid something down :
fear, doubt, plans, control, expectations, pain,
and allowed God to place something new inside them.

And maybe that's what God is asking of you right now.

Not perfection.
Not performance.
Not strength.

Just a place in your heart where He is invited in.

Because you cannot build an altar and hold onto your old ways at the same time.

Altars require release.
Altars require honesty.
Altars require surrender.

They say:

"God, meet me here."
"God, this place hurts."
"God, I don't know what to do next."
"God, I choose You anyway."

And when you build an altar, something begins to shift.

Peace enters where panic once lived.
Clarity replaces confusion.
Strength fills the places that once trembled.
And purpose begins to rise from the ashes of the old season.

Building an altar is not about ceremony
It's about posture.

It's the posture that says:

"I'm done running.
I'm done fixing.
I'm done pretending.
Here I am, Lord.
Do what only You can do."

Sometimes the next step isn't forward.

Sometimes the next step is down
to your knees,
to the quiet place,
to the altar of surrender.

Because what you build in private
will change how you stand in public.

So tonight, or this morning, or whenever you find a moment to breathe

build the altar.

In your room.
In your car.
In your thoughts.
In your spirit.

Build it with honesty.
Build it with tears if you have to.
Build it with trust you barely feel.

Just build it.

Because God meets you at the altar.

He speaks there.
He heals there.
He strengthens there.
He restores there.

And from that place,
He leads you into what's next.

 Reflection

  • What do I need to lay on the altar today?
  • Where is God asking me to surrender instead of control?
  • What part of my heart have I kept closed off?
  • What would shift if I invited God into this place?

     Prayer

Father, teach me to build an altar in the middle of my life, not just when things look holy, but when things feel heavy. Show me what I need to lay down, and meet me in the place of surrender. Do in me what I cannot do on my own. Fill the space I give you. Lead me from this altar into Your purpose. Amen.
