God at Work in Imperfect Parenting

Not long ago, I sent my kiddo to his room and, in my frustration, said, "Get your heart right."

A little while later, he came out and said, "I prayed to God… I'm better now. I'm not going to tell you everything because it's still painful."

I gently asked him, "Do you need a hug?"

He replied, "Yes."

We hugged, and then he said something that stopped me in my tracks.

"I'll tell you the parts you care about, but I'm not going to tell the whole thing because God already knows. And I don't want to cry again."

I told him that was okay.

So he shared the parts he felt ready to say out loud, and I listened. When he finished, we hugged again, and I told him, "I love you. That will never change."

It was such a tender moment, one of those quiet, holy moments when you realize God is gently at work right in the middle of your imperfect parenting.

Watching his emotional growth and his trust in God keeps me humble and pierces my heart in the best way.

Even when we don't get it right as parents, God is still working.

Moments like this remind me how powerful prayer really is. When we pray for our children for their hearts, their choices, their relationship with God, those prayers take root in ways we may not immediately see.

Sometimes those seeds show up in the most unexpected moments… like a child choosing to pray before speaking.

It's so worth praying for your kids, for their relationship with God, and for yourself.

Because every prayer matters.

Every small moment of correction, grace, listening, and love is shaping hearts, theirs and ours.

Scripture

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it."
— Proverbs 22:6

Heart Reflection

  • Do I create space for my children to process their emotions with God?

  • Am I willing to listen with patience, even when I didn't handle the moment perfectly?

  • How can I be more intentional about praying for my children's hearts, not just their behavior?

Prayer

Lord,
Thank you for loving my children even more than I do. Help me lead them with patience, humility, and grace. When I fall short as a parent, remind me that You are still at work in their hearts. Teach my children to run to You with their pain, their emotions, and their struggles. And help me be a safe place for them to land. In Jesus ' name, Amen.
